When On GoogleEarth 124

I solved the challenge posited by Chris in When-onGE 123, it was a quarry in eastern Egypt, so I have to host the game for the fourth time. Find the location of the picture on Google Earth and identify the site and the main period of occupation (write your answer in the comments). The first one to get it correct gets to host the next challenge.

WOGE 124

Update: 2011-03-10. Here is a more detailed view of the structure (or what's left of it) in question.

Detalle

Update: 2011-03-14. The name of the location of this site seems to mean beauty or goodness.

Update: 2011-03-16. A wider view of the sector...

The rules of the game:

Q: What is When on Google Earth?
A: It’s a game for archaeologists, or anybody else willing to have a go!
Q: How do you play it?
A: Simple, you try to identify the site in the picture.
Q: Who wins?
A: The first person to correctly identify the site, including its major period of occupation, wins the game.
Q: What does the winner get?
A: The winner gets bragging rights and the chance to host the next When on Google Earth on his/her own blog!

The theme of the WhenOnGoogleEarth challenge should be an archeological one.

Is the place we have to look for the little castle in the center?

I thought it was better to have the broad view, tomorrow I will upload a picture with more detail, but I think in the big picture you can see enough. It is a small structure, but has a history.

Hi Eloy. I think because of the bad news from Japan, nobody is playing WOGE at the moment. The geological WOGE is also at a standstill since a week. I think we need a week or so to recover and hope that the bad news are going to be better soon....

I agree with your observation, Felix. I hope the situation is not as bad as it seems and that things return to normal rhythm.

Strange place. The castle looks like the center place of the town, but the surrounding area looks kind of devastated....

Maybe that's a clue. In fact, the structure belongs to a different culture that surrounds it.

20 days... I didn't think this was so slow.

May be helps if I say that this "castle" is in a muslim country...

26°34'8.92"N, 50° 3'58.29"E: Tarut Castle, Saudi Arabia

Tarut Castle is the most famous castle in the Eastern Province of Saudi Arabia and the oldest castle in the Persian Gulf. Tarut castle was built by the Portuguese in the 16th century, on the rubble from an event 5 thousand years before. It is located in the center of Tarut Island in Ishtarut near a waterhole known as Al-Awda in the sixteenth century.

Hi Eloy, I did not give up. Even it looks like I'm the last one? At the beginning of the challenge I've been scanning the farer east, as I thought, there is to much
green vegetation in the picture to be in the arid arabian area. As I didn't find it and I'm not very good in finding urban areas, I paused for some weeks.

So my question to the previous players is: should we go on with the challenge. Is there still anybody out there?

Congratulations Felix ... persistence pays off.

I was thinking that there was no one there :-). I guess the game has "oscilations".

It's your turn again, hopefully it brings a lot more participation.

WOGE125 is ready for hunting.
